Help Make IVF Accessible for All Families:

Support the HOPE with Fertility Services Act

Starting a family is the dream of millions of Americans, but for many, infertility stands in the way. The astronomical costs of fertility treatments, often paid out-of-pocket, make this dream seem unreachable. Infertility is a disease like any other and deserves coverage through private healthcare insurance plans.

The HOPE with Fertility Services Act aims to change that with legislation that ensures families who desperately want children have the chance to grow.

The Urgent Need for Change

Infertility is a far-reaching issue, affecting millions of individuals and families across the United States. Despite its prevalence, many insurance companies categorize reproductive treatments like in vitro fertilization (IVF) as an “elective” procedure, denying coverage and leaving families to bear the financial burden alone.

Americans for IVF is working to create lasting change that will have a real impact for those seeking the gift of children and the opportunity to grow their families. But we can’t do it alone, and we need your help.

Key Statistics About Infertility

High Prevalence: According to the CDC, 13.4% (9.7 million) of U.S. women have trouble conceiving and could benefit from IVF support.

Rising Male Infertility: A recent study found a 76.9% increase in male factor infertility since 1990. Multiple factors, including lifestyle changes, environmental influences, and increased awareness, lead to more diagnoses. While significant challenges, advances in medical science offer hope and new possibilities for overcoming infertility.

Limited Coverage: Only 16 states mandate healthcare coverage for reproductive health. However, the scope of required coverage is often inconsistent, inadequate, or unclear. For example, some states only cover diagnostic services but not treatments, while others require people to meet stringent requirements before issuing coverage.

This patchwork of regulations leaves many families in gray areas, wondering what insurance coverage they can expect to cover the expense of treatment.

The Emotional Toll and Stigma of Infertility

People who struggle with infertility often experience profound anxiety and emotional distress. Each cycle costing $15,000-$30,000 , a hefty price tag for these fertility treatments that often make it financially out of reach for many families.

When these treatments, which are often a final step women take to have children, are unsuccessful, many women experience feelings of inadequacy, hopelessness, and grief.

This lonely journey is often misunderstood by others and the financial burdens of paying for fertility treatments only compound these problems.

Beyond these challenges,  there is also a significant stigma associated with being childless.

Innocent questions like “When are you having children?” and recent insensitive remarks about childless individuals can be potential triggers, causing emotional pain and further isolating those who desperately want the gift of children and to grow their families.

Introducing The HOPE with Fertility Services Act

Americans for IVF, in partnership with Reps. Lori Chavez-DeRemer (OR-5), Zach Nunn (IA-3), Susan Wild (PA-7), and Debbie Wasserman-Schultz (FL-25), have introduced the Hope with Fertility Services Act. This bipartisan bill aims to:

  • Cover Diagnosed Infertility: Ensure private healthcare insurance covers infertility that is a result of a diagnosed disease or other physical ailments.
  • Address Unexplained Infertility: Provide coverage for those who cannot conceive after 12 months of trying.
  • Include Iatrogenic Infertility: Ensure coverage for infertility resulting from medical treatments for other conditions, like cancer.

Benefits of the Act:

  • Pro-Woman and Pro-Family: Empowers women and families to overcome financial barriers and achieve their dreams of parenthood.
  • Public Health Priority: Addresses declining birth rates and sperm counts, recognizing infertility as a significant health issue.
  • Mental Health Impact: Alleviates the emotional distress and anxiety associated with infertility by making treatments accessible.
